So, you’re about to have a public speech and need to support it with good-looking presentation slides? Today we’re going to learn how to do this by designing a PowerPoint presentation in Photoshop. The purpose of a presentation is to present information in best possible way. Before you start with the design you need to know if your presentation is meant to entertain, inform, persuade or sell. In today’s tutorial I will show you how to design a PowerPoint presentation that needs to inform (of course) and show presenters creativity and diversity. Let’s get started!

Tutorial Assets

The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial.

• Vector Circles Photoshop Shapes

Step 1 – Creating the Background Pattern

Before we start drawing on a bigger canvas we need to create some patterns for our background effect. To do this open a new document, 70×70 px, fill it with white color #ffffff. Go to View > Show > Grid, it will turn on Grid view. This will help us easily draw a perfect pattern. Now, choose the Line Tool (U) and draw a vertical 1px, black line on the far right of the document.

Duplicate the line and align it to the grid.

Do the same now for horizontal lines. Please note that I left out the top and left line, I didn’t fill the whole grid. This is because the pattern will be repeated and the right and bottom line of next pattern to come will fill that gap.

Create new layer. Choose Marquee Tool (M) and holding shift draw a selection that fits exactly within one unit of our document grid. Fill the layer with black color #000000 and give it 60% opacity.

Duplicate that layer to create a patter like shown in the following image.

Go to Edit > Define Pattern, give it a name (I named it “mozaik”) and click OK. Close the document. It is saved now and will appear in our patter library.

Step 2 – The Big Canvas

Create new 1024×768 px document and save it as background.psd. Unlock the background layer by double clicking it and clicking OK in dialog box (this removes the lock icon from the layer). Double click again on the unlocked background layer, a effects dialog box will pop up. Add gradient effect like shown in the image. Gradient colors from left to right: #f9fff4, #ebf7e7 and #e3f9ed.

Create new layer above and fill it with white. Set blend mode to Multiply and add the pattern overlay with previously created pattern “mozaik”. In effects settings set Opacity to 4%, leave other values default.

Step 3 – Content Layout

Create layer folder and name it “Layout”. Select Rectangle Shape Tool (U) and draw out a 365×747 px shape, fill color #ffffff.

Add gradient effect like shown in the image. Gradient colors from left to right: #e5e3e3, #f6f6f6 and #ffffff. Add Inner Glow effect, color #ffffff, opacity 87% and size 54. Leave other settings default.

Step 4 – Shadow

Create new layer underneath the rectangle shape layer.

Hold Command/Ctrl + Click the shape layer to create a selection from it. While the newly created empty layer is selected, fill it with black #000000. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and enter 6px radius.

Add Layer Mask by clicking the small mask icon at the bottom of the layer palette. Choose a 300px soft brush and set background color to black #000000.

Now, gently brush the parts of the shadow you want to mask (hide), doing this we’ll create a nice shadow effect.

Step 5 – Dotted Lines Pattern

We want to give the content layout a bit more of a real paper look so we need some horizontal paper lines. In order to add them we need to create the pattern first. Create new document 70×70 px, just like we did with our first pattern. Turn on Grid view and draw out two (2) white (#ffffff) rectangles on both sides. Leave the center of the document empty (transparent) size of one grid unit. Draw a black rectangle size of half the grid unit like shown in the image.

Go to Edit > Define Pattern, give it a name (dotted) and save it. Close the document.

Step 6 – Paper Effect

Now we can apply this pattern to our content layout. Copy rectangle shape layer, remove the effects and change color to #838383. Add Pattern overlay effect and choose the dotted pattern we created in previous step. Change layer Blend mode to Multiply and set opacity to 14%.

I wanted to give it a bit worn look so I masked the horizontal lines with a grunge brush. To do this first go to Graphic River and grab some cool grunge brushes. Click the small mask icon at the bottom of the layer palette, select one of the grunge brushes (any will do), set background color to black #000000 and slightly mask the center of the content layout (lines) keeping the lines visible at the edges.

To make it pop out more, I added a semitransparent black border. Do this by duplicating the base shape layer and move it underneath it. Expand the shape by 20px on each side, remove all effects from it, set background color to black and opacity 3%. Done!

Step 7 – Creating the Ribbon

Create new layer folder under the content layout (layout folder) and using Rectangle Shape Tool (U) draw a 78×72 px rectangle. Place it so that it is hidden about 10px underneath the content layout. Fill it with gradient overlay as shown in the image with colors from left to right: #525739 (location 0%) and #d6dbbf (location 27%).

Switch to Direct Selection Tool (A) and select the path. Now change to Pen Tool (P) and add an anchor point in the bottom middle part of the path as shown in the image. Adjust the handles so they’re close to each other.

With this anchor selected hold Shift and using arrow up key nudge the point one time (10px).

Create new layer above. Select Custom Shape Tool and choose the one shown in the image.

Command/Ctrl + click the ribbon shape layer underneath, go to Select > Modify > Contract and enter value of 4px. This will contract the selection by 4 px creating a nice border around.

While selection is active, click the star shape layer (select it) and click the Mask icon at the bottom of the layer palette. This will automatically mask the star shape by the marquee selection we contracted earlier.

Change the color of masked star shape to #b2b7a1 and set opacity to 25%.

Step 8 – Slide Counter

Create new layer above the content layout and using Ellipse Tool draw a small 52×52 px circle. Fill it with #e25601.

Create another layer and place it under the red circle. Select Custom Shape Tool and choose the star burst shape like shown in the image. Fill it with #e9c000. Holding Shift key draw the shape from center of the red circle. Set layer opacity to 20%.

Copy the star burst shape layer and place it under the original star burst shape. Using the Transform Tool hold Shift key, rotate and scale the shape so it is placed like shown in the image.

I spiced it up just a tiny bit more by adding a circular mandala shape (using custom Photoshop Brush) underneath the layers and lowering the opacity to 40%, but you can skip this step, it will still look great!

Step 9 – Inner Page

After creating the welcome screen we’re now going to create a generic background that’ll be used for all other slides of our presentation. Copy the background.psd and rename it to inner.psd. Delete the ribbon layer folder and all content, leaving just the content layout. Nudge all remaining graphics 50px from document top.

First select the base rectangle shape (the one with the gradient effect), choose Direct Selection Tool (A) and select two bottom anchor points of that shape. Holding Shift, press arrow down to expand the rectangle till it overspills the document boundaries.

Do the same with horizontal lines shape…

Finally repeat the step with the semitransparent border. Optionally you could scale or redraw the shadow too.

Change the slide number inside the red circle, add title and footer. That’s it!

Final Image

Step 10 – The PowerPoint

We created the design, now we need to make a real presentation out of it. Export PSD designs to high quality jpeg using the Save for Web option in Photoshop. Name files accordingly and place them in your presentation folder. Fire up PowerPoint and click File > New presentation.

By default PowerPoint adds a title and text field to newly created slide. Go ahead select and delete them because you’re not going to need them.

Right click the slide thumb preview in sidebar and click Format background, a popup screen will be shown. Select Fill from the popup sidebar, select Picture from popup top menu and choose the previously exported background image for welcome slide.

You can copy the first slide or create new one, repeat the step above for inner page (slide) and choose the second background image.

Conclusion

And you’re done. Well… almost done, because now you need to create the rest of your slides and prepare for the speech! I hope you learned a trick or two how to create custom designed PowerPoint presentation and I wish you all the best with your public speaking. See you next time!

Since CS4, InDesign has held the capability to import multiple graphics quickly and all at once. The feature allows the user to place a number of graphics on a document arranged within a grid. This can be particularly useful if you are designing a contact sheet, story board or similar structure. Learn more about importing multiple graphics into Indesign in the following Quick Tip.

Step 1

First, make sure that nothing is selected within your document and go to File > Place. Navigate to where your graphics are saved. Hold down Command and click to select the graphics you wish to use.

Step 2

Click the open button. InDesign will now populate your cursor with the graphics you just selected. The cursor will display a thumbnail of the graphics and will also display how many graphics have been selected for import.

Tip: Use the arrow up/down keys to preview a thumbnail of each individual graphic.

Step 3

To create the grid hold down Shift + Command, the cursor will immediately change to a thumbnail grid preview. Continue to hold Shift + Command, click your mouse and drag the cursor to your desired size. However, don’t release the mouse button just yet.

Step 4

Still holding down the mouse button use the up/down keys to set the number of rows. And left/right keys to set the number of columns. Again don’t release the mouse button.

Step 5

Now hold down the Command key only and use the up/down keys to set the space between the rows. Use left/right keys to adjust the space between the columns.

Step 6

Release the mouse button and InDesign will create a grid containing the graphics you selected earlier. From here you can now fit your graphics accordingly.

Step 7

Tip: Let’s say you select 10 graphics for import but you only set a 6 frame grid. After importing the first six graphics InDesign will present another loaded cursor to place the reminder of the graphics. From here you can start the process again (go to Step 3).

InDesign can handle a variety of graphics including jpg, eps, pdf, tiff, psd and most Adobe formats to name a few. InDesign doesn’t actually place the graphic into the document. Instead it makes a link to the original file and generates a preview within the document. In this Quick Tip you will learn about the various ways you can import image files into an InDesign document and how to replace and re-scale them.

As InDesign is a layout and typesetting program you need to edit and prepare your files within another program, for example Photoshop or Illustrator. Before we start this tut make sure that you have a graphic ready for importing and also have a project open ready for use. To create a new document go to File > New > Document (Command + n).

Step 1

To start you need to prompt InDesign to place a graphic. Do this by File > Place (Command + d) navigate to where your graphic is located, select and click open. When importing graphics you can either import into an existing frame by selecting the frame with the Selection Tool (V) before starting step 1. Or import the graphic directly into the document, which will automatically create a frame for the graphic to sit in. I will explain both processes and the effect each of them will have on the imported graphic.

Step 2: Importing Directly into the Document

Within CS5, once you have clicked open and placed a graphic, a small transparent preview image will appear. You now have a couple of options. Firstly, clicking once will import your graphic at its original size (100%). If the frame is hanging over the edges of the working space use the Selection Tool to drag one of the corners to resize. Hold down shift to constrain the proportions.

Step 3

Secondly, by clicking and holding down your mouse button, you can size the bounding box to suit the layout. After selecting open, click on the document and don’t release the click. Drag your mouse to the required size and then release.

Tip: Holding down Command after you clicked once and while you are dragging will constrain the proportions.

Step 4: Importing into an Existing Frame

Lets say you have a frame sitting a the top of a column and spanning two column widths. Using your Selection Tool select this frame by clicking it once and follow the steps illustrated in step 1.

Step 5

You will notice that graphic has been imported and is cropped. InDesign has imported the graphic at 100%, which in my case is larger the frame you want to place it in.

Step 6

To fit the graphic correctly, activate the Control Dock by going to Window > Control. I have highlighted the buttons that are needed below. If they are not visible select your frame with the Selection Tool. The Control Dock sits at the top of your screen above your document.

Tip: By hovering over each button with your cursor a text description will appear for each icon.

Step 7

To obtain a clearer view of the graphic I have opted to Fit Content Proportionally then Center Content. From here I can edit to suit my design.

Step 8

Once the graphic has been made easier to handle, the Direct Selection Tool (A) can be employed to move, resize and position the content within the frame. Select the Direct Selection Tool and click once inside the frame, you will notice that a brown frame will appear. This frame represents the bounding edges of the graphic you imported.

Step 9

Hover above the brown frame and the Hand Tool will appear. To edit, either click and drag to change the position, or resize by dragging on of the corners out or in.

Tip: Hold down shift to constrain the proportions. The image below is an example of clicking and dragging, notice how InDesign displays a preview of the graphic.

By following these steps you now have the basic knowledge to import and handle graphics. InDesign offers so much more than the basics and I intend on publishing a number of useful tuts on importing graphics in the coming months. I was surprised to see that three quarters of the websites I visited did not have custom 404 error pages. These pages are designed to tell the end user that he or she is lost or has come across a page that no longer exists and thus guides them back to the homepage of the website that they were viewing. Without this 404 error page your viewer may stumble upon the default browser 404 error page and you run the risk of them leaving your website all together. The general purpose of adverting is to convey a message directly and effectively about a product or service; often the best way to do this is to strip things down to the bare essentials. Minimalism has long been one of the most powerful trends in advertising, and with the broadening dominance of digital media, print ads must speak to their market quickly and efficiently. This post brings together a selection of 20 minimal printed advertisements, stunning examples where less is most certainly more.

1. SanDisk

This charming minimalist ad compares compressing data on to a SanDisk Flash Drive with the beguiling art of placing ships in glass bottles.

2. Boysen Paints

Boysen Paints boast environmental certification in acknowledgment of their efforts to reduce the ecological impact of their products. This beautiful ad links the company to nature, with a colourful splash of paint forming the petals and pollen tube of a hibiscus flower.

3. Lego

This wonderful minimalist design reflects the power of Lego’s famous building blocks to fire the imagination, with an incredibly simple arrangement of cubes creating a submarine’s periscope emerging from the deep blue sea.

4. Dolce and Gabbana

Scarlett Johansson adopts a Marilyn Monroe-style pose in this ad, with a minimal, milky colour scheme, drawing attention to Dolce and Gabbana’s red lipsticks.

5. Canadian Paralympics Committee

The Canadian Paralympics Committee employs a no-nonsense approach to this advert for the 2010 team, emphasizing the athlete’s strength and confidence.

6. Wii

This early ad for the Nintendo Wii is minimal in the extreme, giving very little away about the console other than the statement ‘playing – believing’. There has been some dispute about the authenticity of this advert, apparently taken from the pages of a German games magazine, but if real it is a brave and intriguing piece of print advertising.

7. Volkswagen

Dutchman MC Escher was, and still is, one of the most popular visual artists of the 20th Century, famous for his mathematically inspired prints of impossible architecture. This ad places Volkswagen’s 4Motion vehicles in the gravity defying forms of an Escheresque construction.

8. Subaru

Unusually for a car ad, this minimal design doesn’t feature the vehicle itself, but instead shows a stitched-up road apparently damaged by the ‘unkind’ wheels of the Subaru Impreza.

9. McCafe

This ad for McDonald’s McCafe coffeehouse subsidiary features a coffee bean in the shape of a burger.

10. Chicago Tribune

This minimal ad is from a series that reflects on the integrity and importance of the Chicago Tribune’s journalism, laid out with simple phrases and illustrations. The surface of the design, constructed with pages of the newspaper, has a pleasingly handmade feel.

11. 3M Scotch Brite

The message behind this ad for 3M’s Scotch Brite rubber gloves is somewhat ambiguous, but the simple design is minimalist and fun nevertheless.

12. FedEx

This superb ad for FedEx merges New York’s Statue of Liberty with Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, signifying the company’s intercity logistics.

13. Play-Doh

Razor blades, chainsaws, medical pills and this meat cleaver featured in a print campaign for Play-Doh, along with the reassuring message for parents that the children’s modelling product is ‘safe no matter what you make.’

14. Stihl

Stihl make real chainsaws and outdoor power tools, and this sublime print ad is almost subliminal in its minimal design. A circle saw is busy cutting the shapes of stairs and landings from solid blocks of concrete.

15. Coca-Cola

A twist of lemon peel is set against a plain, pale background, with the fruit skin forming the distinctive shape of Coca-Cola’s classic letterform. The ad is for Coca-Cola Light Lemon, a soft drink launched in 2005, and discontinued in the UK later in the same year.

16. Dig2go

This minimal ad concept is for Dig2go audiobooks, which, as the design suggests, enables listeners to read with their ears.

17. World Trade Center Piano Concert

In 2007, a piano recital of compositions by Rachmaninov was performed in memory of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. This advert for the event cleverly and sensitively uses piano keys to echo the outline of the Twin Towers.

18. Huggies

This fresh minimal ad is for Huggies’ baby wipes, which are ‘like having a bath anywhere.’

19. Jeep

The silhouettes of an Eskimo and Bushman merge in this minimal ad, with the cross-over discretely forming the shape of a Jeep 4×4, suggesting the vehicle is suitable for adventure at all ends of the Earth.

20. LA Bicycle

This ad for La Bicycle’s folding bikes is pure minimal simplicity, a folded sheet of white paper representing the ease of collapsing and constructing the cycling machine.
